Modal Interpretations and Relativity
نویسنده
چکیده
Modal interpretations of quantum mechanics posit that the state vector obeys linear, unitary evolution at all times, and supplement the state vector with a set of possessed properties sufficiently rich to account for the occurrence of definite events at the macroscopic level, including definite outcomes of experiments, but sufficiently restricted so as to avoid a Kochen-Specker contradiction. The question arises whether this can be done within the restrictions imposed by special relativity. In a relativistic context, the notion of an instantaneous state of a spatially extended system must be replaced by the notion of a state on a spacelike hyperplane, or, more generally, a spacelike hypersurface. Since hyperplanes belonging to distinct foliations will intersect,

How to reconcile modal interpretations of quantum mechanics with relativity
Modal interpretations are hidden-variable, no-collapse (typically) indeterministic interpretations of quantum mechanics that were designed to solve the measurement problem and to reconcile quantum mechanics with relativity. But, as recent no-go theorems by Dickson and Clifton (1998), Arntzenius (1998) and Myrvold (2002) demonstrate, current modal interpretations are not fundamentally relativist...
متن کاملAutomatic Extraction of Implicit Interpretations from Modal Constructions
This paper presents an approach to extract implicit interpretations from modal constructions. Importantly, our approach uses a deterministic procedure to normalize eventualities and generate potential interpretations. An annotation effort demonstrates that these interpretations are intuitive to humans and most modal constructions convey at least one interpretation. Experimental results show tha...
متن کاملThe Contextual Character of Modal Interpretations of Quantum Mechanics
In this article we discuss the contextual character of quantum mechanics in the framework of modal interpretations. We investigate its historical origin and relate contemporary modal interpretations to those proposed by M. Born and W. Heisenberg. We present then a general characterization of what we consider to be a modal interpretation. Following previous papers in which we have introduced mod...

This paper is a summary of my doctoral dissertation on philosophical interpretations of Einstein's special and general theories of relativity, submitted to the Dept. for History of Science, Univ. of Hamburg, in 1989, which was recently published in the Series Science Networks at Birkauser.i After a brief overview of its content I will focus on a discussion of the method employed to analyse phil...
متن کاملLogic Methods for Many-valued Logics: Higher-order Autoepistemic Language Concepts
The higher-order types of Herbrand interpretations for databases arise often in practice when we have to deal with uncertain or imprecise information, or in constrained databases. They are a consequence of the introduction of a kind of the observational equivalence for the hidden information in the ordinary Herbrand interpretations. It means that the logics for such databases are particular fun...
